NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team picked up big wins and key points Saturday afternoon, as the Redbirds went 11-1 in the Davis Cup-style Redbird Invitational at the Gregory Street Courts. Thanks to those points won, ISU will advance to three finals on Sunday.
"What a great weekend it was for our boys," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We played in and won several finals and more importantly, what I took away from the event was seeing a drastic improvement in a lot of the guys as they were able to get a bunch of match play. I was so pleased to see how they got better with every match they played. Â Next up, we will put our focus on the ITA Regionals in about ten days at Michigan State. We should know later this week as to who gets a spot in the draw."
All three doubles teams picked up wins again on Sunday, as Diego Emilio Moura Herrera and Dominick Cuchran picked up an 8-6 win in the Red Flight over the team of Huck/Minsaas from DePaul. Â In the White Flight, Zane Kohrs and Zacharias Rankloo Rasmusson paired up to win 8-6 against the team of Moser/Sirinit from DePaul. Rounding out action in the Black Flight, Melker Isaksson and Shu-Lun Chang cruised to an 8-1 win over Eastern Illinois' Riera and Pilipovic.
Isaksson also picked up a big win in singles, defeating Riera 6-4, 7-6 to cap off a strong weekend of competition.
