EAST LANSING, Mich. – The first day of a very busy ITA Midwest Regional is in the books and several Redbirds picked up wins to advance to action on Friday in East Lansing, Michigan, on the campus of Michigan State. Nam Pham and Melker Isaksson each won a pair of singles matches to advance to the third round on Friday with a chance to advance to the main draw on Saturday.
"I thought we had a pretty good day overall," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We had some really good wins and lost some heartbreakers but with the ones we lost, we definitely gave ourselves chances to win which is all I ask of the guys. Nam and Melker had a fantastic day setting themselves up for a chance to move on in the draw tomorrow morning before doubles action begins in the afternoon."
Pham took advantage of a first-round bye and defeated Luuk Wassenaar by a score of 6-1, 6-0 in the second round to advance to the qualifying round finals on Friday morning. Isaksson defeated Jakub Zamorski of Chicago State in the first round by a score of 6-7 (6), 6-1 6-1 and then beat Chicago State's Hugo Chatras 7-6 (3) 7-5 to move onto round three as well.
Pol Botifoll Rius was also a winner on the day, taking down Nathan Favier of Youngstown State in three sets in the first round before being beaten in the second round in three sets. Newcomer Arvid Hjalte also picked up a first-round win with a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Lars Minsaas before losing in three sets in round two.
Qualifying singles action continues Friday morning at 8 a.m., followed by the doubles main draw beginning at 10:30 a.m. Links to live stats and live video are available at msuspartans.com.
