EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Illinois State men's tennis team wrapped up action at the ITA Midwest Regional Friday afternoon at Michigan State, with a pair of singles matches and four doubles matches.
"Today was a tough one as we lost a couple three setters in singles," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "Nam and Melker played their butts off to just come up a little short. We will have to wait and see if we can get a lucky loser spot in the draw tomorrow. Doubles however was a mixed result and even though we didn't get the results we wanted, I felt like we played decent doubles on certain courts. But again, this is a time where I am trying out different doubles combinations and so we'll see where we go with these moving forward."
Melker Isaksson looked to move out of qualifying into the main draw Saturday with a victory, but was taken down in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 by Joaquin Caballer of Western Michigan in the morning matches. Nam Pham was also looking to move the main draw, but he also dropped a three-set battle with Jakov Suler of Chicago State by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
All eight players that made the trip for the Redbirds competed in the afternoon doubles matches, but all four teams failed to advance in the main draw. Diego Emilio Moura Herrera and Dominic Cuchran took their match to a tiebreaker, but ultimately were defeated by the team from Michigan State.
The Redbirds will wrap up their fall slate next weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, when they compete in the Drake Invite Friday through Sunday.
