NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team will wrap up a busy month of February in the Windy City this weekend, as the Redbirds are set to play matches at UIC on Saturday and at Chicago State on Sunday.
Winners of five-straight matches, the Redbirds are coming off a dominant 7-0 victory over in-state foe Western Illinois on Wednesday. It was a complete sweep for the Redbirds in doubles play, as each of the duos did not give up a game and won with 6-0 scores. The result was similar in singles action, as each player won in straight sets in relatively easy fashion.Â
The Redbirds will rely on the strong play of freshman Tijana Zlatanovic headed into this weekend's matches. The Salzburg, Austria, native continued the strong start to her debut season with a pair of wins at the No. 1 spot for the Redbirds in two team victories last week and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Singles Player of the Week for the second time this season. With her win against the Leathernecks, Zlatanovic improved to 8-2 on the season, with a 7-2 mark at the No. 1 spot for the Redbirds.
UIC is set to host the Redbirds on Saturday at the XS Tennis Village. The Flames dropped to 4-3 overall on the season with a loss to Toledo on Friday night. Prior to that, they had won four-straight matches including wins over Dayton, Bradley, Eastern Michigan and North Dakota.Â
After having several matches postponed to start the season, Chicago State will officially open the spring campaign on Saturday before hosting the Redbirds in Park Forest on Sunday.
