ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Illinois State sophomore Maria Toledo Bailey has been named the MVC Golfer of the Week for her performance at the Red Rocks Invitational on March 20 and 21.
The Birmingham, England, native was Illinois State's top golfer during the tournament, placing in a tie for 11th overall with a seven-over 223. She played a balanced tournament with scores of 74, 75, and 74 for the three rounds. Her first and third rounds saw her record three birdies over each round, with two birdies in the second round. Of her eight birdies on the tournament, they came on eight different holes, including the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, 11th, 15th, and 18th. She had the tournament's third-best par-four scoring total for the three rounds, averaging 4.10 strokes per hole, and also had the 18th-best par-three scoring (3.17 strokes per par-3 hole).
For the season, Toledo Bailey has the lowest scoring average on the team at 75.5 (75.500), a fraction ahead of Emma Sutton who is 75.5 (75.545). Her low score is 74, which she has done three times, and has been in the 70's in all eight rounds for the year.
The Redbirds return to action on Monday, March 29 when the team travels to Kirkwood, Missouri, to compete in the two-day Diane Daugherty Invitational, hosted by Southern Illinois University.
