NORMAL, Ill. – Winners of seven-straight matches, the Illinois State women's tennis team heads to Tennessee for a pair of matches this weekend at Austin Peay and Lipscomb.
"We have a couple of tough challenges coming up this weekend," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. "Our goal is to adjust to outdoor tennis as quick as possible and give ourselves a chance against two very competitive teams."
ISU won all three of its matches last week, with victories over Western Illinois, UIC and Chicago State. The Redbirds were led in those matches by Tijana Zlatanovic, who went 3-0 in singles action and then combined with Tara Damnjanovic to go 3-0, which earned the duo Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week honors on Wednesday.
Austin Peay will host the Redbirds Friday morning at 11Â a.m. at the Governors Tennis Courts. The Governors started the spring season 2-0 with wins over Central Arkansas and Carson-Newman, but dropped their first match of the season to Middle Tennessee, 4-2, their last time out. Fabienne Schmidt and Danielle Morris have competed in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively, in all three matches this season for Austin Peay and the duo is also a perfect 3-0 this season while playing as the Governors No. 1 doubles duo.
Lipscomb is off to a 3-3 start to their season and will host the Redbirds Sunday at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center at noon. The Bisons dropped a 5-2 decision last Friday against Xavier following a near three-week layoff from competition. After starting the season 3-0, Lipscomb has lost its last three matches.
