ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Illinois State women's golf team, which recently closed its regular season play by finishing in the top half of each of the team's tournaments this season, was picked to finish third at the upcoming MVC Championship, hosted at Bogey Hills Golf Club in St. Charles, Missouri.
The Redbirds earned 78 poll points and three first-place votes for their third place standing. Missouri State is the pre-Championships favorite with 89 points and three first-place votes, while Southern Illinois has been picked to finish second with 87 points and with three first-place votes. The final first-place vote was earned by UNI who was picked fourth with 69 points. Bradley (68), Drake (52), Loyola (41), Indiana State (27), Evansville (26), and Valparaiso (12) round out the 10 schools in the MVC Championships field.
In the GolfStat team rankings, the Redbirds have the highest ranking in the MVC at 128, while Southern Illinois is 142, and Missouri State 144. Bradley (157), Drake (177), UNI (182), Evansville (185), Loyola Chicago (188), Indiana State (216), and Valparaiso all fill in behind Illinois State in the GolfStat rankings.
Leading the Redbirds this season is a group of four golfers who average within nearly a half stroke of each other, led by Maria Toledo Bailey who averages 76.1 strokes per round. Ali Schrock is second on the team in scoring average at 76.4, while Emma Sutton (76.5) and Emma Rouger (76.7) are just behind.
The Championships begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 19 on a 36-hole day of play.
