NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team wrapped up Summit League play Saturday, when the Redbirds hosted No. 45/46 ranked Denver. The Pioneers proved why they are one of the better teams in the country, sweeping the Redbirds, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Gregory Street Courts.
"We had a tough day today," ISU head coach Mark Klysner. "I don't think we played our best, but at the same time we didn't play poorly. We just came up short against a better team today and they showed why they are nationally ranked."
Denver earned the doubles point with a win at No. 1 and No. 2 spots and then went onto win all six singles matches in straight sets. Pol Botifoll Rius and Aleksa Lazarevic put up fights to get games to tiebreakers, but ultimately came up a bit short and dropped their matches.
The Redbirds will wrap up the regular season next Saturday against in-state opponent Chicago State on Senior Day. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Gregory Street Courts (weather permitting).
