SAINT CHARLES, Mo. – On a day that saw rain, sleet, and snow – and oftentimes a combination of the three – on an already challenging course, the Illinois State Redbirds closed play at the 2021 MVC Championship in third place overall in the field.
The Redbirds brought home a handful of awards for their accomplishments during the season and the championship, as Maria Toledo Bailey was named the MVC Newcomer of the Year, the third Redbird women's golfer to earn the award, joining Brianna Cooper (2011) and Marisa Milligan (2008). Toledo Bailey and Emma Sutton were each named to the All-MVC squad for their performance during the season and at the championship.
The Redbirds closed the two-day, three-round tournament with a 944, trailing only Evansville (942) and UNI (942). Rounding in the field behind ISU was Missouri State (948), Drake (959), Bradley (967), Southern Illinois (967), Indiana State (981), Loyola Chicago (991), Valparaiso (1039).
Toledo Bailey was the top individual finisher for ISU, as the sophomore had a pair of birdies and eight pars over the final 18 holes, placing in a tie for sixth overall.
Sutton also had a top-10 finish overall, tying for eighth in the field, behind a final-round 81 (+10) in which she had eight pars and nothing higher than a bogey on her scorecard.
Emma Rouger and Ali Schrock each closed the tournament tied for 19th, Rouger on the back of a final-round 82 (+11) in which she had a birdie and eight pars, and Schrock's after a final-round 88.
Becca Black's final-round score of 83 was the fourth-best individual score of the round for ISU, as her final score of 247 saw her finish in a tie of 28th place.
