BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In the final match of the season, Illinois State sent its seniors out on a high note as the Redbirds picked up a 5-2 win over Chicago State Saturday afternoon at the Bloomington Tennis & Turf complex.
"What a nice way to finish what was one of the most challenging years of our lives," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We pulled a great win to finish the season and I'm just so happy for the guys. We played some great tennis and I'm glad we could send our seniors out on a winning note."
The Redbirds took the early doubles point, thanks to a win at the No. 3 spot Diego Le Gal Perez and Melker Isaksson and a victory at the No. 2 spot by the duo of Aleksa Lazarevic and Brandon Lew.Â
A 6-2, 6-2 win by Le Gal Perez at the No. 3 singles spot extended the Redbird lead to 2-0, and Nam Pham followed with a three-set victory at the No. 1 spot to widen the advantage to 3-0. A three-set win by Pol Botifoll Rius at the No. 2 spot clinched the match for the Redbirds, but a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 by Ming-Chieh Chiu put the icing on the cake in the 5-2 win over the Cougars.
