Final Day Of Redbird Invite Ends In Wins For ISU

NORMAL, Ill. – The final day of the 2021 Redbird Invite wrapped up with several consolation championship wins in singles for the Redbird and a pair of strong finishes in doubles at the Gregory Street Courts.

"We continued with good doubles play today and showed improvement in singles as well," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek stated. "Overall, we got a lot out of the first tournament of the fall season and really enjoyed the home atmosphere."

Doubles matches got things started once again, with the No. 1 doubles team of Tijana Zlatanovic and Maria Potsi taking second place overall after being defeated in a tiebreaker in the championship match by the team from DePaul. Tara Damnjanovic and Penelope Abreu bounced back after their loss in the semifinals yesterday to defeat Kovacs and Bezmenova of Bradley in an 8-0 shut out to take third place in Flight No. 2. Laura Fitzgerald and Alexandra Abyasova wrapped up their stellar doubles play by picking up an 8-5 win in the Flight No. 3 title match to be crowned champions.

In singles action, Zlatanovic came up just short in her bid for a Flight No. 1 championship and had to settle for second place. Abyasova won in straight sets at the No. 2 spot to win the consolation bracket championship match, as did Abreu at No. 6 and Fitzgerald at No. 7.

The Redbirds return to action next weekend at the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana Friday through Sunday in Bloomington, Indiana.
