Redbirds Open Spring Season With Trio of Weekend Match In New York

NORMAL, Ill. – Following a productive fall campaign that saw Illinois State compete in four tournaments, including its home Redbird Invitational, the Redbirds will open the 2022 spring slate this weekend with three matches in West Point, New York, at the Arthur Ashe Invitational hosted by Army.

ISU will play a split doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 15, with match in the morning against Florida Atlantic and one in the afternoon against in-state foe DePaul. The weekend will conclude with a Sunday match against host Army at the Lichetenberg Tennis Center. The matches will be the first of the spring season for all four teams.

"We have been looking so much forward to this weekend for a variety of reasons, " ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "Starting the season off is always exciting, but to do it on such an amazing trip playing really good teams and the guys getting the opportunity to visit one of the coolest campuses in the country that being West Point. I don't have too many expectations as we are so early into the season, but I just want us to compete strong and get better match by match."

The Redbirds return eight players from last year's team and have added three newcomers to the squad this season. They were picked to finish fifth in the 2022 preseason Summit League poll and newcomer Arvid Hjalte was selected as a player to watch in the league.
