TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Illinois State track & field hoisted the Coughlan-Malloy Cup for the fourth-straight year after defeating Indiana State in the annual dual, 153-147, on Saturday inside the Indiana State Indoor Track & Field Complex.
"Super proud coming away with a victory," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jeff Bovee said. "Indiana State is always one of the best programs in the conference year in and year out. It's never easy to come in here and come out with a win."
The Coughlan-Malloy Cup is unique in that the men's and women's team scores are combined into an overall score and the team with the highest combined total wins the traveling trophy. With the victory, the Redbirds have now won the cup for the fifth time in its' 17-year history.
The Redbird women won eight individual events on the day, in addition to a first-place finish in the 4x400m relay. On the men's side, Illinois State captured five event wins in total, as redshirt senior thrower Logan Calvin and fifth year Jake Gillum each set meet records in their respective events.
Picking up where he left off in 2021, Calvin won both the men's weight throw and shot put on the day. With a mark of 20.79m (68-2.5 ft.), Calvin won the weight throw and set a new meet record in the event, which was previously held by Indiana State's Brandon Pounds. His mark also ranks No. 7 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the Valley. Calvin also won the men's shot put, his second event of the day, with a mark of 18.39m (60-4 ft.).
"I'm super happy to see Logan just continue to throw bombs out there," Bovee said. "He's doing very well."
On the oval, Gillum broke the meet record in the men's mile run, clocking in with a time of 4:08.15 to win the race. His time ranks in the top-35 nationally and second in the MVC.
"We had a fantastic mile early by Jake Gillum, breaking the meet record and just narrowly missing the facility record," Bovee said. "I was really pleased to see him so strong this early in the season. He surprised me."
In the men's pole vault, redshirt senior Ryan Ashenbremer cleared 4.97m (16-3.5 ft.) to take the victory and set a new season best. His mark also ranks No. 2 in the Valley on the season.
For the second meet in a row, pole vaulter Amni Austin set a new personal best in the event. Her clearance of 3.76m (12-4 ft.) moved her into sole possession of the sixth best mark in program history. She finished second overall.
An NCAA Indoor Championship qualifier last year, high jumper Kameesha Smith won the event for the first time on the young season. With a clearance of 1.71m (5-7.25), Smith set a season best.
The Redbirds recorded a sweep in both the 60m hurdles and the 800m races. In the women's 60m hurdles, senior Mya Robinson secured the first-place finish in a time of 8.86 seconds. For the ISU men, junior Brandon Ratliff set a season best, clocking in at 8.06 to win the race.
Senior Audrey Harrod made her season debut for the Redbirds, going on to win the women's 800m run in a time of 2:13.61. Junior Riley Wells was the event winner for the men, finishing in 1:56.25 in his season debut.
To cap off the day, the women's 4x400m relay squad of Sa'Mone Winters, Destiny White, Seven Hicks and Jaclyn Greci won in a time of 3:57.33 to seal the victory for the Redbirds over the Sycamores.
"Overall, we need to be better looking on the other side of it," Bovee said "They were better than us in those second and third efforts. If there's an area that we can work on in the next few weeks, it's this."
