NORMAL, Ill. – Coming off a spring-opening split last weekend in Iowa, Illinois State hosts its first two home matches of the spring this weekend and will play three teams in three days over a busy weekend. The Redbirds will host Illinois-Springfield on Friday and Chicago State on Saturday in Bloomington at the Evergreen Racquet Club, before heading to Indianapolis on Sunday to take on IUPUI.
"Three matches in three days are always a challenge, but it's exactly what we need this early in the season," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. "We're excited to get in front of our home crowd and hopefully come away with two wins, before heading to Indianapolis to end the weekend."
Last weekend, the Redbirds split a pair of matches in Urbandale, Iowa. ISU defeated North Dakota in thrilling fashion, 4-3, on Friday before falling to host Iowa State on Saturday. In Friday's win, Maria Potsi staved off five match points at No. 3 singles to come back and win her match and secure the 4-3 win for the Redbirds.
ISU will host in-state foe UIS on Friday in the spring home opener at 2 p.m. and then host Chicago State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. UIS has not yet competed this spring, but Chicago State has been busy with three matches so far. The Cougars are 0-3 to start, with losses to Marquette, SIUE and Illinois last weekend.Â
On Sunday, the Redbirds will square off against IUPUI who is off to a 1-2 start this spring. The Jaguars picked up their first win of the spring last Friday when they defeated Bellarmine, 5-2.Â
Admission is free to all matches this weekend at ERC, however facemasks will be required to enter the building.
