SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A pair of Illinois State standouts will play for individual championships on Sunday, as Nevena Kolarevic and Tara Damnjanovic each won their singles matches on Sunday to advance to the title match on Sunday at the MVC Individual Championships hosted by Missouri State at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri.
"We battled hard today across the board," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. "It's tough not getting those three-set matches go our way, but we are doing the right things and getting better in the process. It's exciting having Nevena and Tara both in the finals, and they're both playing great tennis."
In Flight No. 3, Kolarevic rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Abi Solomon from Belmont to advance to tomorrow's title match against Ana Jover of UIC. In Flight No. 4, Damnjanovic rallied back after dropping the first set to Elizabete Klavinska of Drake to win the final two sets to advance to the championship match via a score of 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. She will face Natalia Nikolopoulou of UIC to decide the championship. Tijana Zlatanovic, Alexandra Abyasova, Silvia Pomarolli, Elena Jankulovska and Zoe Limparis will each play for third place in their respective flights on Sunday, after suffering setbacks in the semifinals on Saturday.
In doubles action, the duo of Alexandra Abyasova and Silvia Pomarolli battled throughout the match, but ultimately fell to the team of Honore and Campigotto of Murray State in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-4).
Play will resume at 9 a.m. for Championship Sunday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
