BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Just as fast as it started, the 2022 fall season has come to an end for the Illinois State women's tennis program as the Redbird Duals concluded Sunday.
The second day of action from the Evergreen Racquet Club saw ISU face off with SEMO and UM in doubles before going head-to-head with Eastern Illinois in singles.
"Overall, it was a good event for us. We were challenged in doubles, which is exactly what we need," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. "A few of those losses were disappointing but we come back and played great singles at the end of the day."
When the 'Birds faced UWM in doubles, ISU would take two out of three matchups. Tijana Zlatanovic and Tara Damnjanovic defeated Stejskalova/Shields 6-2. Meanwhile, Alexandra Abyasova and Silvia Pomarolli pulled out a nail-biting 7-6 (6) win over UWM's Burgersdijk/Simonova. However, Elena Jankulovska and Nevena Kolarevic were not as fortunate, falling to UWM's Konieva/Cavestro 6-7 (3).
Unfortunately, when ISU and SEMO battled, the visiting Redhawks pulled out all three wins over the 'Birds. In those matches, Zlatanovic/Damnjanovic fell 7-5 to SEMO's Tarajova/Valeeva. ISU's Jankulovska/Kolarevic battled to a 7-6 (4) defeat to Shikanova/Lai. Finally, SEMO's Hlacikova/Velkoska came out on top 6-1 over ISU's Abyasova/Pomarolli.
In singles, it was a clean sweep over the Panthers for the home team as only one match required three sets to decide a winner. That three-setter came from the racquet of Tijana Zlatanovic who battled to a 5-7, 6-1, 11-9 win over EIU's Burkaba-Ulanova.
Other singles results include Alexandra Abyasova claiming a clean 6-0, 6-0 win over Gouws of EIU; Tara Damnjanovic and Silvia Pomarolli captured identical 6-2, 6-0 wins over their respective opponents (Monroy and Ellis). Finally, Elena Jankulovska was nearly perfect as well, winning 6-2, 6-1 over EIU's Perez-Korinko. K
This concludes the 2022 fall season for Illinois State. ISU will be back in action as the 2023 spring season gets underway on Jan. 29 when the 'Birds compete against Eastern Illinois and UIS.
