MILWAUKEE – Illinois State headed north to Milwaukee for the first of two weekend matches, as the Redbirds took on Toledo Saturday afternoon. ISU fought hard throughout, but Toledo was able to just pull through and picked up a 4-3 win at the Helfaer Tennis & Recreation Center.
ISU got off to a good start, as the duo of Arvid Hjalte and Zane Kohrs took down the Toledo No. 1 doubles team 6-3 to take an early advantage. However, the Rockets won the final two doubles matches to take the early point and lead in the match.
A win by Hjalte at No. 6 singles when his opponent was forced to retire tied things up, before Toledo regained the lead with a win at No. 1. The Rockets also won at No. 3 and No. 4 to secure the win, but the Redbirds would not go away. A win by Pol Botifoll Rius at No. 2 in three sets and a victory by Diego Emilio Moura Herrera also in three sets brought the score to its final at 4-3.
The Redbirds wrap up the weekend on Sunday morning against host Milwaukee, with first set for 11 a.m.
