Redbirds Drop 5-2 Decision To Butler On Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS – Playing shorthanded in singles, Illinois State nearly came out on top of Butler in Sunday morning's match but the Redbirds could not come from behind as the Bulldogs picked up a 5-2 win at the Butler Bubble.

"Tough loss today, but what a match overall," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We again played some really good doubles and let a lead slip away at one but should have won that point. In singles, we were short two usual starters to injury and so that never makes things easy but a credit to the guys for stepping up and we almost pulled out the win regardless."

A win at No. 2 doubles by Melker Isaksson and Diego Le Gal Perez knotted up things in doubles early, but a win at No. 1 by the Bulldogs in a tight 7-5 match gave them the early doubles point.

Isaksson continued his strong play into singles, earning a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Butler's Alvaro Huete Vadillo to pick up a point for ISU. Arvid Hjalte also earned a victory at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Patrick Joss to give the Redbirds their second point of the day. Butler would go on to win the other four singles matches though to pick up the home win.

ISU is back in action on Wednesday in Chicago, as the Redbirds take on Chicago State in a mid-week matchup set to begin at 1 p.m.
