Redbirds Open Spring Season With Trio of Home Weekend Matches

NORMAL, Ill. – Following a productive fall campaign that saw Illinois State compete in five tournaments, including its home Redbird Invitational, the Redbirds will open the 2023 spring slate this weekend with a matchup against UIC on Friday before a split doubleheader Sunday as IUPUI and Chicago State come to town.

All matches will take place from the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington. The Redbirds and Flames have first serve at 8 p.m. Friday. Then, Sunday sees the Redbirds begin the split doubleheader against IUPUI at 12 p.m. CT Sunday before facing Chicago State later that night at 6 p.m.

UIC comes to town after having played three previous matches against Butler, Western Michigan, and Louisville. The Flames are 0-3 as they look for their first win of 2022-23. IUPUI also comes to town with an 0-3 record against Notre Dame, DePaul, and Butler. Finally, Chicago State is 0-2 so far this season after losing to Notre Dame and Northwestern.

The Redbirds return five players from last year's team and have added six newcomers to the squad this season. They were picked to finish tied for fourth in the 2023 preseason Summit League poll and newcomer Tomas Valencia was selected as a player to watch in the league.
