NORMAL, Ill. – Coming off a 2-0 start to the spring season last weekend, the Illinois State women's tennis team will hit the road to Wisconsin this weekend for a Saturday match at Milwaukee. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the River Glen Elite Sports Club.
"We are excited to get on the road for the first time this spring," ISU head coach Maja Kovacek said. "We will need to make sure we are ready to go from the beginning with great energy in doubles to give ourselves a chance to leave with a victory."
The Redbirds (2-0) picked up a pair of wins last Sunday over in-state foes Eastern Illinois and UIS to get the spring off on a high note. ISU recorded 6-1 wins in both matches and were led by the best doubles team in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The two-time MVC No. 1 Doubles Team of the Year Tijana Zlatanovic and Tara Damnjanovic started off their spring with a strong win over the pairing of Elizaveta Bukraba-Ulanova and Christin Gouws of Eastern Illinois by a final of 6-3. The duo would pick up their second win on the day, defeating Marianela Landi and Eva Rubio of UIS by a score of 6-3. With the pair of victories, Zlatanovic and Damnjanovic improve to 30-16 overall as a doubles pairing for ISU (since 2020-21).
Milwaukee (2-3) heads into the match coming off a tough defeat at the hands of No. 25 Wisconsin on Thursday afternoon at Nielsen Tennis Stadium, despite several strong performances in both doubles and singles action. The Panthers were in good shape against the Badgers well into the middle of doubles play, only to see their nationally-ranked opponents close out the matches strong to pick up the important point to open the match.
