ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Illinois State junior Avalon Woodward has been named the spring season's opening MVC Golfer of the Week after her record-breaking performance at the 2023 Falcon Florida Classic.
The award is the first of the season for the Redbirds, who as a team set school records for lowest round score (284) and tournament score (870) at the tournament.
Woodward set an ISU tournament record with a three-round 211 – three strokes better than the previous school record of 214 set by ISU Athletics Hall of Famer Samantha Richdale in 2005. Her final-round 68 puts her in a three-way tie for the lowest single round in school history, alongside Rachel Powers in September 2012 and Ali Schrock this fall. She placed third overall in the field with the five-under tournament, including two rounds under par. She opened play in Florida with a one-over 73 before coming back on the first day with a two-under 70, setting the stage for her four-under final round.
This season she is leading the Redbirds in scoring average at 74.5 strokes per round and is tied for the team lead with three top-10 finishes.
The Redbirds return to action on Friday, February 24 when the squad takes part in the three-day Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan University at the Rio Verde Country Club.
