Women’s Golf Takes Fifth at HCU Husky Intercollegiate

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Behind an even-par final round from freshman Dani Grace Schrock the Illinois State women's golf team placed fifth of 15 schools at the 2023 HCU Husky Intercollegiate.

ISU had a three-round 912, behind only Sam Houston State (880), ULM (901), tournament host Houston Christian (902), and UTEP (906) and ahead of Texas A&M Corpus Christi (924), Charleston Southern (930), Bradley (934), Lamar (936), Texas A&M Commerce (939), UTRGV (940), Tarleton State (941), Appalachian State (948), UT Arlington (960), and Omaha (964).

Dani Grace Schrock tied for fourth overall in the tournament field with a six-over 222 for the three rounds, with Avalon Woodward finishing just behind with a seven-over 223 to tie for seventh. Michaela Kverkova was the Redbirds' third-highest overall finisher with a 54-hole score of 232 to tie for 30th. Ali Schrock and Kira Wolf tied for 51st overall with a three-round 239.

The younger of the team's Schrock sisters opened her day on the sixth hole and kicked off her day with eight consecutive pars before a bogey on her ninth hole of the day sent her into the back nine at one stroke over par. After three more pars a birdie on her 13th hole pushed her back to even par; however, she closed the day with three pars, a bogey and a birdie to end her day with the even-par 72.

Reigning MVC Golfer of the Week Avalon Woodward opened her day on the par-four fifth hole and started with a double-bogey before coming back with four straight pars and a birdie. A bogey and two more pars had her at two strokes over par for her first nine holes. Three bogeys, a birdie and five pars over her back nine gave her a four-over 76 to close out the tournament.

Kverkova was steady throughout the tournament with rounds of 77, 77, and a final-round 78 in which she had a birdie and 11 pars for her six-over round.

Wolf had a final-round 81 with Ali Schrock carding an 82 for the squad over the final 18 holes of the event.

The Redbirds next tee it up on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19 when the team travels to Sedona, Arizona, to compete in the Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona University.
