ST. LOUIS – After a disappointing setback on Saturday at Austin Peay, the Illinois State women's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Sunday as the Redbirds rolled to a 9-0 sweep over WashU at the Tao Tennis Center.
It was a clean sweep for the Redbirds in the doubles matches, as the teams played 8-game pro sets to decide the outcome. The No. 1 team of Tara Damnjanovic and Tijana Zlatanovic defeated Eliana Hanna and Amber Edmonds by a score of 8-6 and the No. 2 team of Alexandra Abyasova and Silvia Pomarolli bested the team of Hallie Jeffers and Katherine Johnson by a final of 8-4. Elena Jankulovska and Nevena Kolarevic completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over WashU's No. 3 team of Nina Moravek and Ainsley Heidbreder.
The Redbirds kept things rolling in singles, as Zlatanovic nearly swept her match at the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Abyasova also wasted little time with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Moravek and Kolarevic dominated at the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win of her own. Damjanovic was also strong at No. 4, winning 6-1, 6-4 over Amber Edmonds, and Pomarolli also won in straight sets at No. 5. Jankulovska completed the sweep, needing three sets to take down Jeffers.
The Redbirds are back in action on Wednesday, when they host in-state foe Western Illinois at noon for a non-conference match at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
