NORMAL, Ill. – As the 2023 spring season continues, Illinois State women's tennis is back home for a midweek matchup against Western Illinois Wednesday. First serve is set for noon at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
The Redbirds (6-4) saw a split weekend as they dropped a 5-2 result in Clarksville, Tennessee to Austin Peay on Saturday before responding to defeat Washington University 9-0 on Sunday.
Against the Bears, it was a clean sweep for the Redbirds in the doubles matches, as the teams played 8-game pro sets to decide the outcome. Both no. 1 and no. 3 doubles finished 8-6 along with no. 2 doubles seeing a final of 8-4 from the efforts of Alexandra Abyasova and Silvia Pomarolli.
The Redbirds kept things rolling in singles, as only one match needed the full three sets, but it was Elena Jankulovska completing the sweep as she took down Jeffers.
Western Illinois (4-5) comes into this week on a two-match losing skid ahead of a week that sees three matches in four days for the Fighting Leathernecks. The program most recently saw a 7-0 sweep at the hands of Bradley last Saturday in Galesburg.
Agatha Carbonell and Lucky Kancherla hold similar 3-4 records in dual singles this season while it is the pairing of Kancherla and Aina Cortina-Pou playing the most doubles together, going 4-4 this season.
