MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Illinois State baseball 2019 alum Brent Headrick has been called up to the Minnesota Twins' Major League team, as revealed Sunday morning.
Headrick, who was already on Minnesota's 40-man roster but is being called up to the Major League team for the first time, is expected to serve in a long-relief role, per The Athletic reporter Aaron Gleeman.
Headrick boasts a 3.52 ERA in 184 minor league innings between five different Minor League teams. Headrick has pitched nine innings for the triple-A Rochester Red Wings in 2023. Headrick has 238 minor league strikeouts and a 1.29 career WHIP.
The Custer Park, Ill. native was drafted by Minnesota in 9th Round in 2019 and is Illinois State head coach Steve Holm's second MLB player as a head coach as Jeff Lindgren was called up to the Miami Marlins earlier in 2023.
While at Illinois State, Headrick had a 4.55 ERA over 205.2 innings with 193 strikeouts. Headrick was the 2019 MVC Pitcher of the Year as he recorded a 3.47 ERA with 115 strikeouts over 96 innings. He provided the Redbirds with a 6 IP, 14 K performance against Indiana on 5/31/19 in the NCAA Tournament.
Headrick joins Lindgren, Paul DeJong (St. Louis Cardinals), and Owen Miller (Milwaukee Brewers) as Redbirds on MLB rosters.
