RICHMOND, Ky. – Using rounds of 295 and 300 the Illinois State women's golf team stands in sixth place at the 2023 Colonel Classic and is just four strokes out of second place with 18 holes to play in the tournament.
ISU's 595 trails only Austin Peay (585), Georgia State (591), Dayton (594), North Alabama (594), and Bradley (594), and the 'Birds are ahead of Belmont (601), Morehead State (602), Bellarmine (602), Butler (604), Eastern Kentucky (606), Akron (607), Marshall (610), Cleveland State (619), Ohio (623), and Ball State (624).
The Redbirds are led after the first 36 holes by Michaela Kverkova, who carded rounds of 74 and 73 for a 147, tied for 11th overall. Avalon Woodward's 148 (71-77) is second on the squad and tied for 19th, as Dani Grace Schrock is tied for 27th after her 150 (76-74). Ali Schrock is tied for 34th after rounds of 74 and 77 for a 36-hole score of 151, while Kira Wolf rounds out the ISU golfers in the field with a 158 (82-76), tied for 79th.
In her first round of the day, Kverkova opened with six consecutive pars, before recording two birdies and two pars over her next four holes to drop her aggregate score to -2. Over her following six holes she had three pars, a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey to push her to two shots over par, before she closed her opening round with two pars to end with a two-over 74. She came back over the back nine with a steady round of 73 which had 17 pars and a solitary bogey.
Woodward was over par for just three holes over her first time around the course, as she opened with seven consecutive pars before she carded a birdie on the par-three 14th hole – her eighth hole of the day. With two bogeys and three pars over her next five holes she was pushed to one shot over par; however, the junior responded with back-to-back birdies on her 14th and 15th holes of the day to drop to under par, where she stayed for the remainder of the round, closing with three pars. She was even par through the first eight holes after a birdie, a bogey, and six pars; however, her final 10 holes saw one birdie, five pars and four higher-than-par scores en route to her five-over 77.
The younger of the Schrock sisters opened her day with a first round four-over 76, in which she had three birdies, five over-par scores, and nine pars, before coming back stronger in the afternoon round with a birdie, three bogeys, and 14 pars for her two over 76.
Ali Schrock started her day with a two-over 74, as she had a pair of birdies, a dozen pars, and four bogeys. She finished her day with seven pars, three birdies, and eight bogeys for the five-over 77.
Wolf had an opening round 82 with a birdie and nine pars before coming back with the team's third-lowest score in the second round, as her four-over 76 was comprised of a birdie, 14 pars and three over-par scores.
ISU takes to the course for the third and final round on Tuesday morning, as the squad will tee off at 8 a.m. (CT) alongside Dayton and North Alabama.
