RIO VERDE, Ariz. – The Illinois State women's golf team carded a 296 – the team's 11th sub-300 round of the 2023-24 season – as the squad sits in sixth place after the first of three rounds of the 2024 Rio Verde Collegiate.
Ali Schrock led the way for the Redbirds by tying for 15th after the first round with an even-par 72, while Jinyoung Yun finished one over par with a 73 and is tied for 24th. Michaela Kverkova finished three shots over par with a 75 to tie for 34th, as Avalon Woodward and Vinisha Gunaseelan each shot a 76 to tie for 41st individually.
The Redbirds' 296 has them behind just five schools, including first-day leader Utah Tech, who shot a 287. Missouri State (289), Xavier (291), Cal Baptist (292), and Bradley (295) finished just ahead of ISU's 296. Wichita State (297), Butler (298), Akron (299), Kennesaw State (299), South Dakota (302), Ohio (302), Ball State (304), Bowling Green (305), Western Michigan (305), Evansville (305), Oakland (307), Loyola (309), Eastern Michigan (312), and Central Michigan (316) all finished behind the 'Birds.
The 11 sub-300 rounds are the second-most in a season in program history, behind just the 12 from the 2021-22 season.
Schrock's round saw her card a pair of birdies, and just one over-par score, to go along with 15 pars, as the 72 is tied for her second-lowest round of the season.
Yun had two birdies and an eagle during her round, along with 10 pars and five over-par scores, finishing with a 73 for her opening round of the tournament.
Kverkova's round had a birdie and 13 pars, as Woodward and Gunaseelan each had 14 pars on their round.
The squad returns to action tomorrow morning in an 11 a.m. (CT) shotgun start to the day.
