Women’s Golf Second After Opening Day at Chris Banister Golf Classic

GLENCOE, Ala. – Using an opening round from graduate Ali Schrock in which the Pontiac native leads the individual field, the Illinois State women's golf team is second of eight teams at the 2024 Chris Banister Golf Classic.

The Redbirds finished with a 19-over par 307, and trail just Chattanooga (295) for the top spot in the field. Chasing ISU include North Alabama (312), Jacksonville State (312), Northern Colorado (314), Queens (324), South Alabama (356), and Stonehill (357).

Shrock was the only player in the field under par on the opening day, and one of two to be at even par or lower as the entire field had difficulty scoring over the opening 18 holes. Jinyoung Yun and Dani Grace Schrock are tied for 19th through 18 holes with matching 78's, while Avalon Woodward and individual Kira Wolf's 80 are tied for 24th. Finally, Vinisha Gunaseelan's opening 84 has her in 34th place with two rounds remaining.

Starting on the first hole, Ali Schrock had a rough start to her day, as she was two over par through her first six holes with a birdie, two pars, and three bogeys. She rebounded quickly, with a hot stretch surrounding the turn with four birdies over a five-hole span, dropping her to two shots under par. She was one over par over the final seven holes with a birdie, four pars and a pair of bogeys.

Yun and Dani Grace Schrock shot matching 78's on the opening day, Yun's coming with three birdies and eight pars, while Schrock's round saw a dozen pars and six bogeys, and the pair currently sit just inside of the top-20 overall.

Woodward and Wolf finished just behind, Woodward carding her 80 with a birdie and 10 pars, while Wolf – playing as an individual – had two birdies and nine pars in finishing eight shots over par. Gunaseelan's 84 had nine pars and nine over-par scores in her round.

The Redbird squad tees off alongside Jacksonville State and Chattanooga, starting at 10:10 a.m. tomorrow morning, while Wolf starts play as an individual at 8:10 a.m.
