Birds Prepare for Matches against No. 43 Marshall and Radford in West Virginia

HUNTINGTON, W.V.-- The Illinois State women's tennis team (4-3) will hit the road for back-to-back matches in the Mountain State against the No. 43 Marshall Thundering Herd (8-1) on Feb. 21 and the Radford Highlanders (1-1) on Saturday, Feb. 22. 

LAST TIME OUT

The Redbirds prevailed over Butler University of the Big East Conference (0-7) on Feb. 12 by score of 4-1 inside the Bulldog Tennis Bubble. ISU battled to three singles wins and picked up the doubles point.

In singles play, junior Silvia Pomarolli defeated Norah Balthazor of the Bulldogs at No. 2 in straight-sets by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-4. At No. 4, junior Nuria Sanz picked up a win over Emma Beavin, 6-1, 6-4. The final win of the day came thanks to freshman Nicole Iosio who took the second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (5) after a 6-2 first set win against Lauren Cook.

In doubles play, the Birds swept all three matches with junior Lana Caculovic and Pomarolli winning 6-2 at the No. 1 position. At No. 2, freshman Emma Lindh and graduate student Elena Jankulovska won by a wide 6-3 margin. Rounding out doubles play was Sanz and Iosio to secure the early advantage with a 6-4 win against Emma Beavin and Balthazor.

SCOUTING THE THUNDERING HERD

Marshall defeated VCU in Richmond, VA on Feb. 16. In doubles play, Sophia Hurrion / Aisling McGrane bested Sofia Jane Thorne/Lea Malazdra of the Rams by a score of 6-3. In singles play, Emma Vanderheyden won in straight-sets over VCU's Mariam Ibrahim, 7-5 and 6-3 inside Thalheimer Tennis Center.

SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS

Radford played to a 6-1 defeat against Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA on Feb. 8. In singles play, Lexi Smolder picked up a win against Maria Turchetto of Liberty by scores of 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 3. In doubles competition, Brooke Murphy and Michaela Stephens claimed the only doubles win for the Rams over Celina Joseph and Sadie Daavettila by a 6-4 final.
