NORMAL, Ill. – It was a much better day for tennis on Sunday in the Twin Cities, as Illinois State, Western Illinois, Saint Louis and Bradley did not have to deal with any weather delays on the second day of the annual Redbird Duals held at the Gregory Street Courts.
Illinois State was able to stack up some wins, both in doubles and singles action. The final two rounds of doubles started the day off, as Silvia Pomarolli and Nuria Sanz defeated Richardlyne Francois and Jessica Hess of Western Illinois by a score of 6-1 in the third round.
As the action moved to singles, things began with completing the matches that were halted Saturday due to weather in the second singles round. Sanz needed three sets to pick up a win over Western Illinois' Chloé Routier 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, while Nicole Iosio also needed a third-set tiebreaker to beat Jessica Hess of WIU by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Pomrolli and Sophie Marie Lowe also picked up straight set wins to close things out with a 4-2 record.
The day wrapped up with the third singles round, as Sanz picked up a second win this one over Mariia Pukhina of Bradley by a score of 7-6 (7), 6-0. The Redbirds are back in action next Friday through Sunday, as they host the annual Redbird Invitational at the Gregory Street Courts.
