WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Illinois State women's tennis team officially opens its spring dual-meet season on Sunday, when the Redbirds travel to West Lafayette to take on Purdue. First serve is set for 2 p.m. CT at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
SCOUTING THE REDBIRDS
• Illinois State was the No. 3 seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Championships last season and advanced to the semifinals, falling to eventual league champion UIC.
• The team returns three student-athletes who earned All-Valley honors last season, including Nicole Iosio who was tabbed All-MVC First Team singles honors at the No. 5 spot, and Sophie Marie Lowe who received All-MVC Second Team honors at No. 6.
• Emma Lindh also earned All-MVC First Team accolades with partner Elena Jankulovska at No. 2 doubles.
• Last year, the Redbirds also opened the dual season at Purdue, falling by a score of 6-1 on Jan. 18.
SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS
• The meet against the Redbirds will be the second of the weekend for the Boilermakers, who open their dual meet slate on Saturday against in-state rival Butler.
• The Boilermaker team consists of five returners and three newcomers and are led by first year head coach Raquel Atawo. The roster consists of two freshman, three sophomores, two seniors, and a graduate student.
• Purdue finished last season with an 11-9 overall record and a 5-8 mark in the Big Ten.
• Fatima Gutierrez was victorious in her singles performance vs. Illinois State last spring with a score of 6-2,6-2, thus playing a role in Purdue taking the first two points in singles.
