ST. LOUIS – Illinois State's No. 1 doubles tandem of Lana Caculovic and Silvia Pomarolli opened the dual meet season with a big win at Big Ten Conference foe Purdue. For their efforts, the duo was named the Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week by the league office on Tuesday.
Caculovic and Pomarolli earned a 6-3 victory to help the Redbirds secure the early doubles point on Sunday against the Boilermakers. That point would prove very important, as the Redbirds went to the last match in singles tied before falling to Purdue by a final of 4-3 on the road in a tough matchup to open the spring season.
The Redbirds are back in action for a pair of matches this weekend, with a 10:30 a.m. contest at Western Michigan set to get things started on Friday. ISU will follow that with a 12:30 p.m. contest on Sunday against Butler in the home opener for the Birds at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington.
