KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the second time in as many meets, Illinois State dropped a close match on the road as the Redbirds were defeated by host Western Michigan by a score of 4-3 on Friday morning on the Sorensen Courts at the West Hills Athletic Club.
Western Michigan jumped out to an early lead, as the Broncos secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Illinois State did pick up a win at the No. 1 spot, as the reigning MVC Doubles Team of the Week of Lana Caculovic and Silvia Pomarolli defeated Lola Glantz and Marielou Baudouin by a score of 6-3.
In singles action, neither team fielded a player at the No. 6 spot, so WMU took a 2-0 lead in the match. However, Vittoria Benedetti took down Sienna Osborne by a final of 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot to trim the WMU lead to 2-1. The Broncos then extended the lead to 3-1 with a victory at the No. 1 spot, before Pomarolli defeated Frida Weijerman 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot to make the score 3-2. The Redbirds then tied the match with a win at the No. 5 spot, as Nuria Sanz earned a 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Baudouin to tie the match at 3-3. Unfortunately for the Redbirds, Western Michigan's Audrey Smitek picked up the win over Nicole Iosio in three sets 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot to secure the victory for the Broncos.
Illinois State will host Butler on Sunday afternoon at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m. CT
