DEKALB, Ill. – Under the leadership of new head coach Maja Kovacek, the Illinois State men's tennis team opened its spring season on Saturday in DeKalb against in-state foe Northern Illinois. The Redbirds fought back from an early hole, but were not able to get past the Huskies and fell by a final of 4-3.
NIU took the early lead by winning the doubles point, with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The duo of Christian Capacci and Finn Logue were able to win their match, earning a 6-4 victory at the No. 4 spot.
In singles action, Adrian Dibildox earned a win at the No. 2 spot over Iker Dellien in straight sets and Tin Ostro made relatively easy work of Federico Scotuzzi at the No. 4 spot, with a 6-4, 6-1 win. The other singles win for the Redbirds came by way of a three-set win by Caden Scarlett at No. 6. However, thanks to the early doubles point, the Huskies needed to just split the singles matches to pick up the win, which they did with victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5.
The Redbirds are back in action on Friday, January 30, when they host in-state foe UIC at the Evergreen Racquet Club at 7:30 p.m.Â
