ST. LOUIS – Illinois State senior Silvia Pomarolli led the Redbirds to a pair of team wins in California last week and for her efforts, she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Singles Player of the Week on Wednesday by the league office. Pomarolli previously won weekly MVC honors with partner Lana Caculovic as the MVC Doubles Team on the Week in January.
Pomarolli came up big for the Redbirds in a pair of wins on their spring break trip. On Saturday against Pacific, Pomarolli secured the winning point for the Redbirds in a 4-3 come-from-behind victory. With the match tied 3-3, Pomarolli defeated Pacific's Rayna Sugai by a final of 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Redbirds. She then followed that up with a 6-0, 7-6 (4) victory at the No. 2 spot against Dominican's Deepalakshmi Vanaraja on Sunday in a 7-0 sweep for ISU. Pomarolli has now won eight of her last ten matches overall, while also playing at the No. 1 doubles spot with Caculovic.
Illinois State will wrap up its California trip on Thursday, when the Redbirds head to Turlock to take on Stanislaus State at 3 p.m. CT at the Stan State Tennis Courts.
