Undefeated in Seattle; Soccer Posts Shutout

SEATTLE, Wash. - Notching its second win of the weekend, the Illinois State women's soccer team shut out Seattle University 1-0 Saturday afternoon, bringing the team's weekend record to 2-0 after defeating Washington on Friday.

With the score knotted at zero heading into the game's final minutes, Redbird freshman Mel Routledge scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Megan Christiansen. Routledge was the `Birds leading scorer in the 2005 season with seven goals, while Christiansen was forced to sit out the entire fall '05 season with an ACL injury.

Goalkeeping duties were again split on Saturday afternoon, with keepers Andrea Shaw and Eric Goethel splitting the shutout. Each goalie played a period for the Redbirds, with Shaw starting in the net.

Illinois State head coach Pete Kowall was pleased with his team's will to win.

"We stuck in out in the end and put the ball in the net to win the game," said Kowall. "We played well enough to get results this weekend and that is what we were looking to do in the spring season. We are coming together as a team and that will show in the upcoming season."

The Redbirds will wrap up their spring season with an alumni game and a match against cross-town rival Illinois Wesleyan in the upcoming weeks.
