Wisniewski's Goal Called Back, Soccer Ends in 0-0 Tie

DAYTON, Ohio - A second-half shot by Illinois State freshman Ammanda Wisniewski reached the back of the Dayton goal but was called back when Wisniewski was cited with a foul on the Flyer goalkeeper in the 49th minute of Sunday morning's women's soccer game. Instead of a game-winning goal for Wisniewski and a victory for the Redbirds, the teams battled to a double-overtime, scoreless draw.

Illinois State moves to 2-2-2 on the season, while Dayton continues to search for its first win at 0-2-3. This was the fourth game that the `Birds took to overtime, though ISU has yet to net a win in extra periods.

Wisniewski found her way into the box just inside the second half. She took a feed from a Redbird midfielder and shot the ball while Dayton goalkeeper Niki Reed charged the ball. Wisniewski's shot sailed into the net, but the forward was called for a foul on the goalkeeper and her goal didn't count.

Illinois State head coach Pete Kowall believed his team should have won the game, though he was pleased with the shutout.

"Dayton was a very good team and on the road, we were able to out-shoot them, and out-corner them," said Kowall. "The goal that got called back was a questionable call and we really thought it should have been counted. Regardless, we had plenty of chances to score and winning the game all comes down to us finishing our chances."

The Redbirds recorded 25 shots on the day, led by sophomore Mel Routledge and junior Yvonne Northover, who each added five. Dayton tabbed 18 shots, just four on goal.

ISU also led in corner kicks, taking an 8-3 advantage. Routledge and senior Meghan Boler split corner-kicking duties for the `Birds.

Kowall was also impressed with the play of the Redbird defense.

"Our defense was really strong this afternoon," Kowall continued. "We didn't allow many chances to score in a double-overtime game and also posted our second shutout of the week."

Redbird goalkeeper Andrea Shaw ended the day with four saves, while allowing no goals and recording her second shutout of the weekend. Reed played all 110 minutes in goal for Dayton and tabbed six saves in the game.

Illinois State plays both of next week's games on the road, as the `Birds go to Eastern Michigan on Friday for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Eagles. They then travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on IPFW in 4 p.m. Saturday game.
