Soccer

20Q with Yvonne Northover

GoRedbirds.com: What has been the highlight of your soccer career so far?
Yvonne Northover: In Canada I played for the Alberta provincial team and we won Nationals, which is actually how I got recruited to come to ISU.

GR: What was your favorite moment during the last soccer season?
YN: I'd have to say last spring when we went to Seattle. I didn't stop laughing the whole time. The soccer was competitive and we did really well. We also got to do some sightseeing.

GR: How do you think new head coach Drew Roff will impact your team?
YN: Very positively. I think he already has, even just with the last spring working with us. He is new, so we don't really know what he is going to do. We all will be trying our hardest to impress him in order to earn a spot.

GR: Is there any team you are looking forward to playing against in the upcoming season?
YN: A lot of them, but specifically Drake, because we haven't beaten them since I have been here. I am also looking forward to playing Evansville because we lost to them last year.

GR: What goals do you have for your team?
YN: My goal is probably like all teams at Illinois State, win the Missouri Valley Conference championship.

GR: Are you working on anything this summer to prepare for the upcoming season?
YN: There are a handful of my teammates staying this summer that are committed to weight lifting and conditioning.

GR: What do you miss most about Canada? YN: I definitely miss my family, my friends and the mountains.

GR: What made you choose to play soccer at ISU?
YN: When I was playing at the Nationals Tournament with the Canada Provincial team. I was recruited there by (former coach) Pete Kowall at the time and he was persistent and really seemed to want me to come here.

GR: What other sport would you love to play besides soccer?
YN: I don't know how realistic this is, but I would like to do some kind of water sport, like wake boarding. I'd also like to do gymnastics. I love watching it, so I think I would love to do it as well.

GR: Do you have any pre-game rituals?
YN: Not me personally, but my team does. We blast Garth Brooks in the locker room.

GR: How old were you when you first started playing soccer?
YN: I was four years old. There was about a team of five players.

GR: What makes you most passionate about soccer?
YN: Everything about it. The girls and being able to work your hardest and see it pay off. Eventually, it pays off.

GR: Do your teammates have any nicknames for you?
YN: My last name is Northover, and the opposite is South under. So they call me South, Southie and South Under.

GR: What power would you rather have, being able to fly, being invisible or being able to read peoples' minds?
YN: Being able to fly, because I could go home whenever and it would be cheap.

GR: What is your favorite board game?
YN: I like Scattergories.

GR: What was your favorite cartoon as a kid?
YN: Recess and The Simpsons.

GR: What would you choose for your last meal?
YN: Stir fry with lots of meat.

GR: Where is the one place you wish you could visit?
YN: I would like to visit Hungary, eventually. That's where my dad is from and I've never met anyone on that side of my family besides his brother and my grandma. But I would like to see how he grew up. Also, I would like to visit Australia.

GR: What is your favorite holiday?
YN: I really like Halloween. I like dressing up.

GR: Which would you rather be: a UFC fighter or rodeo cowboy?
YN: I would probably be a rodeo cowboy. In Calgary, we have this thing called "Calgary Stampede". There are rodeos and chuck wagons. The whole city shuts down and people stop going to work for 10 days.

GR: What famous celebrity, dead or alive, would you like to go on a date with?
YN: Johnny Depp. He is actually hanging in my living room!

GR: Do you have any hidden talents?
YN: I can do the worm!

GR: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
YN: In 10 years, I will hopefully be done traveling and settled down, most likely in Canada.
