NORMAL, Ill. - For the third time this season, Illinois State soccer freshman Sasha Reiber was named the Brine Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Reiber received the award Monday for her effort in ISU's 1-0 win over Drake that secured the Redbirds' tie with Evansville for the MVC regular-season title.
Reiber made three saves to record her sixth shutout of the season, which is tied for the fourth-most in ISU single-season history. Reiber posted five shutouts in six Valley games, which led the league. She also finished the season ranked first in goals against average (0.67) and tied for third in save percentage (.840) in MVC games.
Reiber's three Brine MVC Defensive Player of the Week awards are the most by any conference player this season and she is the only freshman to win the award. It is the third time in program history a player has won the award at least three times. Becky Feldmann won four in 1998 and three in 1999.
Reiber's award is the fourth bestowed upon an ISU goalkeeper this season. Junior Katie Grill-Donovan earned the Brine/MVC Defensive Player of the Week award Sept. 2.
