ISU Defense Dominates; Mutters Breaks Record in 5-0 Shutout Victory Over UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Redbird senior Danielle Mutters surpassed the Illinois State all-time career record for minutes played as the Illinois State women's soccer team remained undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference, shutting out Northern Iowa, 5-0, Wednesday. Mutters has now played for 5619 minutes to eclipse Shannon Duggan's career record of 5553 minutes set in 2007.

Along with Mutters, Redbird freshman Rachel Bostick led ISU to its sixth-straight win, scoring back-to-back goals in the second half. Bostick now has four goals on the season, while the win marks ISU's fourth shutout of the season and first shutout in Valley play. The win also marks the fourth game this season the Redbirds have scored four or more goals in a single game.

With the win, the Redbirds improve to 8-5-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the MVC, while the loss marks the Panthers' eight-straight defeat as they fall to 2-10-2 overall and 0-4-0 in the Valley.

ISU lead UNI at halftime 2-0 with the Redbird defense leading the way, holding the Panthers to just one shot total in the half. As for the Redbird offense, ISU outshot UNI 12-1 on the half, while nine Redbirds recorded shots. Raquel Rattray scored first for the Redbirds 10 minutes into the half, while Mutters followed with a goal of her own six minutes later from a free kick. The goals marked the third of the season for both Rattray and Mutters.

"I was very pleased with how we got off to an early start," said head coach Drew Roff. "With the lead, we were able to put pressure on the Panthers throughout the game. After halftime, we knew the next goal would be huge, and we came out and put the game away. I liked that we got the shutout, and I liked the fact that several different players continue to score goals. It was a nice team effort from top to bottom."

The Redbird defense continued its dominance allowing just one shot by the Panthers in the second half with only two shots the entire game, while the Redbird offense secured the shutout with three more goals in the second half. Bostick scored her first goal of the game 58 minutes in, while her second goal came just two minutes later. Ammanda Wisniewski netted her third goal of the season and the Redbirds' fifth goal of the game at the 65-minute marker. Wisniewski's goal came off a corner kick by MVC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 12) Jessica Carlson. In total, ISU outshot UNI 21-2 on the game.

Sasha Reiber played all 90 minutes at net for the Redbirds, recording her fifth win of the season and third shutout victory.

Illinois State now leads the all-time series against Northern Iowa, 9-1-0.

The Redbirds will return home to face 2008 MVC Tournament Champion Evansville Sunday at 1 p.m. at Adelaide Street Field.
