Mutters Named Nominee for National Award

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior Danielle Mutters is among 38 nominees for the 2009 Soccer News New Women's College Player of the Year Award, as announced by ChicagoLand Soccer News. Mutters is also one of six finalists for the ChicagoLand Soccer News Women's College Player of the Year Award.

The two-time Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Mutters anchored the Redbird defense and was named an All-Valley First-Team selection. She recorded 1770 career minutes of play to rank first at Illinois State for minutes played in a season. Mutters ranks third at ISU for career starts with 72 and led the Redbird defense with a career-high three goals and a career-high three assists on the season.

Mutters was also named MVC Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 28) and tied of first in the Valley for assists in conference play with two. The 2009 Redbird co-captain, Mutters contributed to a Redbird defense that posted a 1.23 goals against average and eight shutouts and was named to the 2009 MVC All-Tournament team after leading the Redbirds to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in six years.

Other nominees for the ChicagoLand award include Melissa Henderson (Notre Dame), Lauren Fowlkes (Notre Dame), Lauren Cheney (UCLA), Lindsay Campbell (Indiana) and Sarah Hagen (UW-Milwaukee).

Online voting concludes December 15. Online fan voting accounts for 40% of the vote in determining the Soccer News Net Player of the Year. Winners will be announced in January.
