ISU Soccer Wins Second-Straight; Tops IUPUI, 3-1

INDIANAPOLIS - Redbird Jess Carlson scored two goals to lead the Illinois State women's soccer team to victory over IUPUI, 3-1, Saturday, April 4, at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis.

Carlson's first goal came only one minute into the game. Alyssa Schulz passed the ball off to Mary Sahm, whose shot deflected off the goal post, but Carlson was there to put the ball away off the rebound.

IUPUI responded with its only goal off a free kick, 22 minutes into the game.

Carlson also scored Illinois State's second goal with an assist from Sahm.

Not only did Sahm have an assist in the game, she also scored Illinois State's third and final point. Sahm scored off a header from a cross by Danielle Mutters.

"Overall, I thought it was a very solid performance, and I was very pleased with how we played with an attacking mindset throughout the full 90 minutes," said head coach Drew Roff. "Jess, Nicole Russell, and Alyssa in particular were very dangerous for us up top all afternoon. They set the tone with their work rate, and they really played to their strengths which enabled them to create several good scoring opportunities as a result. One thing that we have focused on recently is playing with more conviction in the attacking third of the field ,and I thought we had several players step up and do a fantastic job of that on Saturday."

With the victory, the Redbirds improve their spring season record to 3-0-1.

The Redbirds will continue their spring schedule Saturday, April 11, at Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Saint Louis, where they will play SIU-Edwardsville at 3 p.m.
