Explosive First Half Leads to 5-0 ISU Shutout Victory

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Redbird senior goalkeeper Katie Grill-Donovan tallied her second win and first shutout of the season, while five different Redbirds scored goals as the Illinois State women's soccer team dominated Morehead State, 5-0, Sunday. Ammanda Wisniewski scored her second goal of the season, while Rachel Bostick, Alyssa Schulz, Afton Delvecchio and Danielle Mutters scored their first goals of the season.

The five goal game total ties for fourth place in program history for most goals scored in the game by the Redbirds. The last time the Redbirds scored five goals in one game was Oct. 19, 2008, against Indiana State.

"We definitely created a lot of scoring chances in the first half," said head coach Drew Roff. "The last couple games we have been able to get early goals and start off on the right foot. I thought it was great team performance overall, and we were able to hold on for the shutout." All five of Illinois State's goals came in the first half. Bostick started the Redbirds' offense, scoring the first goal 15 minutes in on a header off a free kick by Mutters. Four minutes later, Schulz scored goal number two, while Carlson got the assist. The Redbirds' last three goals came in the final 11 minutes of the first half with Wisniewski, Delvecchio and Mutters all finding the back of the net.

Wisniewski only played 36 minutes, but she led the team in shots with five, while Mutters led the Redbirds in points with three on the game.

Grill-Donovan recorded three saves on the game, while the Illinois State defense held Morehead State to just eight total shots on the game.

On the weekend, the Redbirds scored eight goals by eight different people and now have nine players with points on the season.

"It is always nice to have that one player who can get several goals, but at the same time, I think we are more dangerous by spreading the ball around," said Roff. "By not having that one player, no team can focus all their energy on stopping that one player. It's harder to stop several players who can score."

With the win, Illinois State is 4-5-1 overall and remains undefeated against Morehead State, leading the all-time series,3-0-0. Morehead State falls to 4-6-1 overall.

The Redbirds will be back in action Saturday (Oct. 3), when they begin Missouri Valley Conference play at Indiana State at 6 p.m.
