Mutters Named MVC Defensive Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior Danielle Mutters was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday, Sept. 28, as announced by the league office.

Mutters led the Redbird defense as the Illinois State women's soccer team went 2-0 this weekend. In a 5-0 win against Morehead State, she had a hand in the Redbirds' first and last goals, assisting Rachel Bostick with a free kick to start off the game and scoring a goal of her own in the last five minutes of the first half.

"Mutters anchors our back line," said head coach Drew Roff. "She keeps the team organized back there. She did a nice job this past weekend, especially in Sunday's shutout. She scored some goals for us last year, and she had a goal and an assist on Sunday (Sept. 27). Any player who can anchor the defense and also score goals brings something special to the team."

This is the first player of the week honor for Mutters. In 2008, Mutters was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-Valley First-Team selection.

Evansville's Kristen Davis was name MVC Offensive Player of the Week this week.

The Redbirds will be back in action Saturday (Oct. 3), when they begin Missouri Valley Conference play at Indiana State at 6 p.m.
