NORMAL, Ill. - Three Illinois State soccer players were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District V Women's Soccer Team in a release issued by CoSIDA Tuesday afternoon. Seniors Bethany Brown and Alyssa Schulz were honored along with junior Jessica Carlson for their contributions on the soccer field and in the classroom.
"All three players have been very productive for us and have played big roles this season," head coach Drew Roff said. "They are great examples of what an ideal student-athlete should be at Illinois State. It is a great honor for them to be recognized for their accomplishments and all three are deserving of that recognition."
Brown has appeared in 17 games for the Redbirds this season and has played a vital role on a defensive unit that has posted a 1.20 goals against average so far this season. Off the field, the Vernon Hills, Ill., native completed her undergraduate degree in criminal justice with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is currently pursuing her master's degree at Illinois State. Brown was a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First-Team selection and CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District V honoree in 2009.
Carlson has started all 17 games for Illinois State and leads the team with 17 points on six goals and five assists. The junior forward has twice been named Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week and has recorded 10 points her last five matches. In the classroom, Carlson is a physical education major and owns a 3.82 grade point average. The Darien, Ill., native was an All-MVC First-Team selection and MVC Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete First-Team honoree as a sophomore.
Schulz has played in 16 contests this season for ISU, missing one game due to injury. The senior forward has tallied eight points on three goals and a pair of assists and netted the game-winner for the Redbirds in their 2-1 victory at Kent State. Schulz is an elementary education major and has posted a grade point average of 3.92 as a student at Illinois State. The Maple Grove, Minn., native was a CoSIDA/ESPN All-District V Second-Team selection and All-MVC Second-Team honoree last season.
