NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State soccer team wrapped up the 2010 spring season Sunday with a 1-0 victory over the Northern Illinois Huskies on ISU's Adelaide Street Field.
The Redbird goal was made by sophomore Jessica Carlson halfway through the first period. Junior Nicole Russel's shot was off the crossbar, and Carlson was there for the rebound and put the ball in the net.
Before the win over the Huskies, the Redbirds traveled to West Lafayette, Ind., to play against the Big Ten's Purdue Boilermakers. Illinois State fell just short as the final score was 2-1.
Freshman Kelly Rosenthal kept the `Birds from being shut out with her goal against the Boilermakers. Junior Alyssa Schulz recorded the assist after putting the ball into scoring position for Rosenthal.
Head soccer coach Drew Roff feels the spring season was beneficial.
"We definitely made some strides, and got the chance to take a look at our players," Roff said. "The players got some experience that is really going to help them in the future. It was a nice blend because we saw some really nice things that we can build off of, but we also realized that this summer there will be some work to do."
The Redbird soccer team moves into preparation mode now as the `Birds will train on their own over the summer until August 4th, when the team meets back on Illinois State's campus to prepare as a team for the preseason.
