NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., Saturday afternoon to split its first two contests of the spring season. The Redbirds fell, 1-0, to Iowa last Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa.
Freshman Kyla Cross scored the first goal for ISU, before junior Mary Sahm notched the game-winner on a shot from 25 yards out in the second half.
"I thought we played very well in the first half," said head coach Drew Roff "In the second half, we got off to a slow start, but I think Mary's goal really jumped started us. It was a good overall performance and very solid defensive effort. We are really starting to come together as a team through these first two games."
The Hawkeyes bested Illinois State in the spring opener for the Redbirds, but Roff saw a lot of positives out of his squad.
"Last Saturday's game was very evenly played and I was pleased with the way that we played," Roff said. "I thought we deserved a tie, but we have up a goal in transition and that was the difference. We learned a lot about our team in that first game and I definitely think it showed today."
The Redbirds will continue their spring schedule with a trip to DeKalb, Ill., next Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., before hosting in-state rivals DePaul, April 17, and Illinois, April 22, to wrap up their spring slate.
