ST. LOUIS - Redshirt freshman Aryn Newsom and freshman Rachel Tejada took home two of the three weekly Missouri Valley Conference women's soccer accolades this week, as Newsom was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week and Tejada earned her third MVC Newcomer of the Week honor.
Newsom had a career weekend, collecting 12 saves and allowing just one goal in two matches. The Manteno, Ill., native posted her first-career shutout in Illinois State's 3-0 win at Eastern Michigan, making a career-high nine saves in the contest. She capped the weekend by making three saves and allowing just one goal in the Redbirds' loss to Western Michigan.
Tejada continued her torrid goal-scoring pace by finding the back of the net three more times this weekend. All three of her goals came in ISU's 3-0 win at Eastern Michigan, marking her second hat trick of the season. The Troy, Ill., native leads Illinois State with 12 goals and 28 points, and ranks second in the nation in both categories.
The Redbirds will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 25, when they host Drake to open conference play. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Adelaide Street Field.
