ST LOUIS – Aryn Newsom, a senior goalkeeper for the Illinois State women's soccer team, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the period of Aug. 18-24, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday.
Newsom, a native of Manteno, Illinois, broke the ISU career record for goalkeeper wins in Sunday's 5-1 victory over Central Michigan. Newsom, who also helped the Redbirds to a 4-1 win over Northern Illinois on Friday, notched her 37th career win on Sunday to break the school record. Newsom logged 158 minutes over the two-game stretch, making four saves while allowing just one goal.
The exercise science major has been equally impressive in the classroom, maintaining a 3.89 cumulative grade-point average (GPA), including a perfect 4.0 GPA last semester.
MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week candidates must carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution, and be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their athletic performance over the previous week.
