Koehl Earns Heidecke Award

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State soccer redshirt junior Lauren Koehl was named the 2015 recipient of the Julie Heidecke Award Sunday following Illinois State's match versus Evansville at Adelaide Street Field.

"Lauren is a selfless teammate," said head coach Eric Golz. "Lauren brings her best on a daily basis and she is a great person and teammate who prioritizes the team above herself. Character and humility are two characteristics Julie possessed and I think Lauren possesses those as well."

On April 29, 1998, Illinois State soccer player Julie Heidecke was involved in an automobile accident that tragically ended her life. In her one season with the Redbirds, Heidecke's personality and demeanor inspired teammates and coaches. As a result, former head coach Pete Kowall, the Julie Heidecke Foundation and ISU Athletics established an award in her memory to recognize a Redbird soccer player following Heidecke's path in commitment, spirit, determination, leadership, sportsmanship, academics, morality and concern for others.

"I am honored to accept the award," said Koehl. "I have heard a lot about Julie's character and presence both on and off the field and I am very thankful to be thought of for the award."

Koehl and the Redbirds will close out the regular-season Thursday at Indiana State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
